I think the opportunity for out reach for congregations of the churches of Christ is at an all time high. We have so many tools at our finger tips it’s amazing. It has never been so many tools so readily available in the history of the world. I’m serious about that statement.
I have been a member of the church of Christ for over 30 years, I really love the Lord’s church. I have seen many changes over the years. I will discuss a few of these changes in this article.
Things change right?
Not the word of God…But, things definitely change over the years. One of those changes I see is the fact that many in the churches of Christ are getting older.
I read somewhere that the median age is now 49, my exact age. That’s old. I see some of our congregations and it’s pretty obvious that members are older. The problem that we have is that we did not replaced ourselves, as a result, our numbers are decreasing.,
What’s the cure for congregations?
Members in local congregations have to get back to sharing the word with friends and family members. I don’t see that like I use to. Instead of technology and all the advancements that we have helping the body of Christ, maybe it’s a curse. We have devices for the purpose of freeing up time but we are busier than ever.
I’m hopeful with some encouragement and training and tools we can turn this trend around. I’m praying that preachers, elders and deacons will see the state of affairs and make some serious changes. I remember the faithful gospel ministers who use to warn us about the coming apostasy. But, we didn’t listen. Much like the people of Noah’s day.
The Solution for churches of Christ!
I do not have a all hope is lost mentality. I do feel like its the eleventh hour. I have created www.matthew1618.com with the vision of giving members tools to evangelize. I really believe that some members will grasp the concept and run with it. That will make all the difference in the world. They say there are over 2 million members of the churches of Christ in the world. So, we will not need a large number to get zealous about evangelism.
Some think that it’s impossible to grow since we are non denominational and we are non instrumental. They say that the young people will no be interested in that type of worship service. Our reply to that is that is, “are seeking to please God and not man.” Remember Paul’s word guided by the Holy Spirit? For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. Galatians 1:10. I think the young and the old will become member of the churches of Christ if we teach them!
