11 Reasons why people love a charismatic church

Why do people seek out and have a fascination

with mega churches and churches that are charismatic?  If you ask some, “Are you looking for a church based on Bible teaching?”  They will probably tell you they’re looking for a charismatic church!  But what is a charismatic church?

Ok, lets have a look at the definition of charismatic and charisma.  See Your Dictionary image below.

Many want to attend churches where they can get a healing or where ministers claim that they have the ability to prophesy.  Ministers will tell followers that God has this blessing for their life, but, you have to sow a seed of faith.  This seed usually requires a financial investment.

Check out 11 reasons why people love a charismatic church.

11 reasons

1. Entertainment Baby!!

Some in the religious world believe that the more entertainment the better when it comes to our worship to God.  John 4:24 Teaches that God is spirit and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.  Spirit right motives and truth has to do with giving God what he prescribed.  Remember Nadab and Abihu who offered strange fire,

Leviticus 10, remember Uzzah who wanted to touch the Ark of the Lord when he wasn’t authorized to touch it?  See this article from Gotquestions.

God’s word is right!  We aught to obey God rather than man!  Did you know the largest mega church in the US is:

Lakewood Church
Location: Houston, TX
Pastor: Joel Osteen
Average weekly attendance: 43,500
Denomination: Independent, non-denominational

In Matthew 16:18 Jesus promised to build his church.  We find Christ’s church in the Bible.  We find how she is to worship, her organization, her designation and more.  Christ died for his church.

Acts 20:28.  Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Someone has said, “lights, camera, religion!”

2. Very few rules!!  No pattern.  Man makes up the rules as he goes along.

In some of these mega churches and charismatic congregations the so called “pastors” make up the rules.  Many members may not study the Bible for themselves, they simply depend on what pastor tells them.  This is dangerous especially, if what “pastor” is telling them can’t be found in the scriptures.

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of Goda]”>[a]may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

God doesn’t want us to add to or take away from his word.

Revelation 22:18-19

I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

Deuteronomy 4:2

“You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Proverbs 30:5-6

Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar. Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

Deuteronomy 12:32

“Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it.

Mark 7:13

thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

3. It reminds them of a night club

Some people love to party.  they party on Saturday and go to church on Sunday expecting the same type of atmosphere.  And, they get it many times.

 Romans 13:11-14

This is necessary because you know the times—it’s already time for you to wake up from sleep, because our salvation is nearer now than when we became believers. The night is almost over, and the day is near. Let’s therefore put aside the actions of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let’s behave decently, as people who live in the light of day.

No wild parties,

drunkenness, sexual immorality, promiscuity, quarreling, or jealousy Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, and do not obey your flesh and its desires.

Ephesians 5:15-18

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.

4. It just feels right!

Our feelings in not a safe guide when it comes to pleasing God.  Of course, we need our heart or feelings too.  But we are not guide solely by them.

Here is what the God word says about our heart: “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (Jeremiah 17:9).

And our Lord said, “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander” (Matthew 15:19)

5. No one judges anyone else!

Ok, when we do our mess and we want to justify our actions, what is the main verse we run to?

Yep, you guessed it!  Judge not that you not be judged.  Was Jesus saying that we can’t determine whats right and wrong?  No, if you look at the context you will see what Jesus is teaching.

Matthew 7:1-5

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.  Now, you see what the Lord is teaching?  You can’t judge if you have a plank in your own eye.  You have to get that out first!

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” John 7:24

6. The minister or leader is fun!

Did you know if the blind leads the blind they both fall into a ditch.

Mark 7: 7-9 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Are you following the doctrine of men or God?

7. It’s my family church. This is a big problem!

Do you think people will deny God and his word because it goes against their family church or family religion?  Jesus knew this would be a problem years ago.

A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’…

Then Jesus taught…

37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

Matthew 10:37-38

8. Ok, most of us have been guilty of being

attracted to someone at church.  Some of you may be too old to remember those times, but most of us can remember them.  Maybe you met your husband or wife at church.  So, maybe this is not all bad, I think the problem comes in when we are at a church that is not teaching God’s word in its simplicity and the only reason we go to a church is to be on the hunt.  What to do?  First, seek out a church of Christ that teaches the gospel. There, you will learn what the Lord will have you to do to be saved.  Once you are saved, then wait on the Lord.  Don’t just take the first bus that comes.

Isaiah 40:30-31

30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

People in the US love big stuff!  Big houses, big SUV’s, big buildings, big trucks and big dogs.  I have to admit I like big dogs too. (When they are on their chain.)  We up-size our drinks at McCaDees, Wendy’s, and almost anywhere else.  Many times it’s cheaper to buy the large drink than the smaller sizes.  Why the obsession with Mega size?  Not sure.
The desire to have everything over-sized has spilled over into religion as well.  When people see the mega churches they assume that they must be doing something right.  But, you have to see what God’s word teaches about the subject.  In Noah’s day the majority was lost in sin and were lost in the flood waters.
Here is a warning from Jesus:

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

10. You may think I’m reaching

on this one.   But, people love the food and fellowship of the charismatic churches.  They have cookouts, fellowship meals, and coffee and donuts, and more.  Oftentimes, they collect big sums of money, and many times they’re willing to spend this money on dinners and get-togethers.

11. Finally, some love

he big screens and the surround sound that you find in these charismatic churches.  People flock to see entertainers perform the latest songs that gets people emotions high!  They love the praise dancing and the hand clapping in the isles.  Naturally, they feel that God is pleased with their actions.  Remember God is the audience in worship and we must worship the way he prescribes, not how we feel like worshiping.  In other words, worship is not entertainment.
