Why do people seek out and have a fascination
with mega churches and churches that are charismatic? If you ask some, “Are you looking for a church based on Bible teaching?” They will probably tell you they’re looking for a charismatic church! But what is a charismatic church?
Ok, lets have a look at the definition of charismatic and charisma. See Your Dictionary image below.
Many want to attend churches where they can get a healing or where ministers claim that they have the ability to prophesy. Ministers will tell followers that God has this blessing for their life, but, you have to sow a seed of faith. This seed usually requires a financial investment.
Check out 11 reasons why people love a charismatic church.
1. Entertainment Baby!!
Some in the religious world believe that the more entertainment the better when it comes to our worship to God. John 4:24 Teaches that God is spirit and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Spirit right motives and truth has to do with giving God what he prescribed. Remember Nadab and Abihu who offered strange fire,
Leviticus 10, remember Uzzah who wanted to touch the Ark of the Lord when he wasn’t authorized to touch it? See this article from Gotquestions.
God’s word is right! We aught to obey God rather than man! Did you know the largest mega church in the US is:
Location: Houston, TX
Pastor: Joel Osteen
Average weekly attendance: 43,500
Denomination: Independent, non-denominational
In Matthew 16:18 Jesus promised to build his church. We find Christ’s church in the Bible. We find how she is to worship, her organization, her designation and more. Christ died for his church.
Acts 20:28. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Someone has said, “lights, camera, religion!”
2. Very few rules!! No pattern. Man makes up the rules as he goes along.
In some of these mega churches and charismatic congregations the so called “pastors” make up the rules. Many members may not study the Bible for themselves, they simply depend on what pastor tells them. This is dangerous especially, if what “pastor” is telling them can’t be found in the scriptures.
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of Goda]”>[a]may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
God doesn’t want us to add to or take away from his word.
I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.
“You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar. Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
“Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it.
thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
3. It reminds them of a night club
Some people love to party. they party on Saturday and go to church on Sunday expecting the same type of atmosphere. And, they get it many times.
This is necessary because you know the times—it’s already time for you to wake up from sleep, because our salvation is nearer now than when we became believers. The night is almost over, and the day is near. Let’s therefore put aside the actions of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let’s behave decently, as people who live in the light of day.
No wild parties,
drunkenness, sexual immorality, promiscuity, quarreling, or jealousy Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, and do not obey your flesh and its desires.
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.
4. It just feels right!
Our feelings in not a safe guide when it comes to pleasing God. Of course, we need our heart or feelings too. But we are not guide solely by them.
Here is what the God word says about our heart: “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
And our Lord said, “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander” (Matthew 15:19)
